There is a lot of talk about finding your purpose or your WHY in marketing.
We are all in business for a reason. IF you are solely in business to MAKE money, while a worthy goal, people are going to feel that and you probably won’t have many customers. IF you are solely in business because you NEED to make money, people are going to feel that desperation too and probably you won’t have any customers
Your purpose is the intersection of your passions, values, talents and skills/experience. So let’s take these one by one:
What is it that you are passionate about?
I know we hear this all the time, but if money were no object, what would get you out of bed in the morning ready to take on the world? For me it is making the world a better place to work and to live. Maybe I watched too many Old School Miss America contests and heard “world peace” more than once at an impressionable age said by beautifully confident women on TV.

What is it that you value?
Your values are enduring beliefs or feelings that a specific mode of conduct is personally or socially preferable to another mode of conduct – it is the worth or importance a person attaches to something. You probably learned these from your family and your community growing up. My parents were always having people over for dinner parties, so I grew up valuing friendships and community.
What are you good at?
We all have that special gift to share with the world, what is your special gift? Are you good at making people feel welcome and comfortable? Are you good at seeing the big picture and breaking down the steps to get there either for yourself or others? Because I have been in branding for over 20 years, I have a marketing brain and am able to see marketing opportunities for myself and others.

So, when you mash all of these things together, you get your why:
Passion + Values + Skills
For me it is: Making the world a better place to live and work + friendships and community + marketing opportunity.
